The Bone People

  • Apr. 20th, 2009 at 8:37 PM

 I can't figure out what exactly I want to talk about from the first 150 pages of the novel. I do like this better than anything else we've read save Oscar Wao. However, the narrative is so scattered that it's hard to pick out one thing to focus on for an extended period of time. I fear that if I try to focus on one aspect of someone's actions, personality, or internal thoughts, I miss something that's going on else where in the story.

I always have a quote that stands out to me when I read something...and if there's nothing I come away extremely disappointed with the book. Fortunately, TBP provides the goods: " To care for anything deeply is to invite disaster"( 34). First, no shit! Second, from the very moment I read this, I knew Kerewin was done for. But who will be her downfall? Will she care too deeply for the child, the father or for them both? My knee-jerk reaction is to believe that her (very) surpressed need to nurture a child will lead her to loving Simon like he is her own. I must admit, it really isn't much of a stretch simply because Hulme does an incredible job of laying the foundation for the reader to build on themselves.

And yes, I'm posting my homework on LJ. It's easier that way, I can find it later. :)

Closest book Meme

  • Dec. 31st, 2008 at 4:55 PM

Definitely just stole this from Rosie.

* Grab the nearest book.
* Open it to page 56.
* Find the fifth sentence.
* Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.
* Don’t dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.

"Mr. Pillsbury," I said. "you are in a position to know the position to know the situation in regards to the schoolhouse contract."
-All the King's Men, Robert Penn Warren

And if I don't make it back here later, Happy New Year, loves!
